Practise Music Video

  • At the end of last year, we did a practise music video, to Britney Spears- Hit Me Baby One More Time
  • This helped us with lip syncing and also directing a music video
  • It made me realise the importance of planning, and knowing what you want for specific shots, this will help me with my coursework for this year

The Beatles- Come Together

After our class pitches, me and Emmie decided to work together, and we did decide to use the song I pitched, Come Together by The Beatles.

We have changed various aspects of my initial pitch:

  • There will be 4 main characters, including some lip syncing
  • The four will start of in what is seen as a "flat" just "messing around" this will be in colour and they will be in typical everyday clothes, such as jeans and a hooded jumper, there will be diegetic sound
  • They will then go into four different rooms, and when they come out, it will be in black and white, they will be wearing suits, as they come out the lyrics will start
  • They then gradually make their way down the stairs, picking up placards saying "come together" on
  • There will then be a "4x split screen" in which you can see each member going their seperate ways, one will be getting the train, a taxi, a bus and walking
  • This is to connote they are seperating
  • We will then film each of them embarking on their journey, picking up people as they go along
  • We will do reaction shots of the public from around Leeds
  • As the lyrics "Come together, right now, over me" it will again split into a 4x screen, and you can see each of them lip syncing
  • Eventually, in the last verse, you can tell that the four are going to come back together, this will be done by shooting various shots from the same place, but different angles
  • They will then reunite, and on the last "Come together, right now, over me" it will be connoted that they are hosting a concert, as The Beatles famous did on a rooftop, and U2 later mimicked with their "Where The Streets Have No Name"

Apple Records

Thanks to the help of modern technology, and me becoming a "fan" of The Beatles on facebook, I have found three video clips, in which it tells you about Apple Records, the owner of The Beatles recordings.

The Beatles

  • The Beatles were an english rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960
  • They are one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of music

The Beatles band members:

John Lennon (1940-1980)
Lennon was shot dead by a schizophrenic fan.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney were one of the most succesful teamwriting duo of the century.
Together they wrote various tracks from "Let It Be" to "Ticket To Ride"

Paul McCartney (Sir) (1942-)
Singer, songwriter and guitarist for The Beatles
In 1957 Paul McCartney was invited to join John Lennon's band The Quarrymen. Eventually George Harrison and Ringo Starr joined and the new band became The Beatles
Throughout the 1980s and '90s McCartney continued to record and perform, and was awarded the MBE in 1997, making him Sir Paul McCartney

George Harrison (1943-2001)
George Harrison joined John Lennon and Paul McCartney in 1957, playing guitar for The Quarrymen. By 1962 the group had added Ringo Starr and become The Beatles
Several of The Beatles' most famous songs were written by Harrison, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something."
In 1999 he was stabbed and wounded in his home by an obsessed fan. Harrison died in November 2001 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Ringo Starr (1940-)
Ringo Starr played drums with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes from 1959 until 1962, when he replaced Pete Best permanently as a member of The Beatles
Together with John Lennon, George Harrison and Paul McCartney, Ringo became world famous

The History of The Beatles can be found here, this is one their official website: http://www.thebeatles.com/#/history/Introduction

Apple Records is a record label founded by The Beatles themselves in 1968, as a division of Apple Corps Ltd Allen Klein ran the label in 1969, it was then run by Neil Aspinall on behalf of the four Beatles, he then retired in 2007 and was replaced by Jeff Jones.

Sony ATV own the rights to The Beatles records.

Censored Music Videos

Many music videos have caused such contraversy that they have had to be censored, however MTV have come under strong criticism for being too "politcally correct" and sensitive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_on_MTV

(The substitute video)
  • Cher- If I Could Turn Back Time
  • Cher caused great contraversy in this music video by wearing a fishnet body stocking, with a revealing black one piece body suit on top
  • MTV banned the video in 1989, and later only played the video after the 9pm watershed
  • A censored version of the video was then produced, showing less sexual explicit content

  • Robbie Williams- Rock DJ
  • Due to it's explicit content, including Robbie Williams ripping off his clothes, skin and organs
  • The ending was cut by most music channels across Europe, including MTV and The Box
  • Other music channels cut from Robbie dancing in his underwear to dancing as a skeleton

Lip Syncing Task- Duck Sauce- Barbra Streisand

After pitching our ideas for our lip syncing task, the class decided as a whole that Duck Sauce- Barbra Streisand, pitched by Beth Cooper was our favourite.

  • Beth, acted as director, splited the class up, each with different tasks for preperation of filming.
  • She gave Emma the task of cutting down the song by taking out long sections of parts without lip syncing.
  • The rest of the class came up with ideas for shots, and most importantly the lip syncing shots.
  • We all took on a part of where the fake "Barbra Streissand" spoke, giving us the oppurtunity to lip sync, George took on the part of the male rapper, allowing him to also lip sync.
  • As a group we then split up induvidually to do shot lists for sections of the edited version of the song
  • Emma had 0.00-0.51
  • Beth had 0.52-1.24
  • Wizz and George shared 1.25-2.09
  • And myself and Emmie shared 2.09-2.42
  • We then spent a full school day filming the various shots, and a few lessons to allow us to re-do shots, we then came together as a group choosing the shots that worked best. Beth then took on the role of editing the clips together.
This is our final video, which can be found on youtube

  • The practise lip syncing task was highly beneficial as it gave us all the oppurtunity to lip sync, and understand the importance of getting it right on time

The Beatles fan pages

I have been looking for The Beatles fan pages, as this a good way of showing people our work and getting feedback of our ideas.
It provides fans a place to upload pictures, videos, chat in forums and communicate with other fans.
Some fan forums, such as,  http://www.thebeatles.com/ also provide the option of subscribing to a newsletter.

Fanpop

Fanpop provides a variety of fan bases from bands to television shows.
I have signed up to this forum, in the hope to get feedback on our work for our video.

Facebook also has it's own page for "The Beatles" in which you can share pictures, videos and comments with other fans.
The people behind this fan page on facebook also post videos, posts and photos, they also post facts about the history and the companys who own the rights to The Beatles tracks.  http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/thebeatles?v=wall

This shows the use of modern technology in providing information about bands and artists.

Contacting labels

Through research on the internet, we found out that Sony Music, own the rights to the Album "Abbey Road", by The Beatles, which has our chosen track "Come Together" on.

However, we were not sure if the website was a reliable source so we then found a help line number to call, to ask if they did in fact own the rights to this album. http://ask.yahoo.com/20031210.html

They then put us through to Sony ATV publishing, who stated they did own the rights, we then researched Sony ATV publishing and got an email address in which we could contact them asking for their permission in using the track. sync_marketing.uk@sonyatv.com

We made sure they knew that it was for our coursework and not for any commercial gain or use.

The Beatles- Come Together lyrics

  • I came up with this idea due to hearing it on an advert for The X Factor
  • I had been wanting to use an old, "classic pop" song
  • Due to the fame of The Beatles, a lot of people know the song, therefore this would widen the target audience
  • As it is known as a "classic" I could use a range of ideas in my video, making it more modern, I could make it more post-modern, as I am using an existing idea, and playing around with the music video fir it, it has intertextuality
  • "The Beatles week" on The X factor, was timed with you now being able to download their songs on Itunes
  • My idea, was for the video to be in black and white, and following a main person, he eventually picks up people along the way on his journey, and he is holding a sign saying "come together" they all then eventually gather in a big group for the final lyric of "Come together, right now, over me"
  • There would be a variety of shots, of various people, but mainly following the main persons journey, and shots of the publics reaction
